Hurricane Irene Is Headed This Way

Hurricane Irene is near the northeastern tip of Puerto Rico and is predicted to be headed right by the Treasure Coast overnight Thursday and throughout the day on Friday.
Forecasters say it is still too early to predict the strength of the storm once it arrives, but the current best estimate is that it could be a category 3 when it passes South Florida. Before it comes our way, Irene will pass over highlands in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. That process will hopefully weaken the storm.
As of 9am, Monday, Hurricane Irene’s maximum sustained winds were 80 mph and extended out 150 miles from the center. The storm was moving at about 14 mph.
Currently the storm is a category 1. The latest forecast has Irene hitting South Florida as a category 3 storm by Thursday.
