A $400 Million Mistake

Imagine if you were Mark Zuckerberg’s Harvard roommate back when he was creating what became Facebook. He asks you if you want in… and you turn him down. It wasn’t a big deal at the time, but now that decision has ended up costing you an estimated $400 million.

That’s exactly the scenario that happened to Joe Green. The Harvard graduate turned down Zuckerberg’s offer of getting in on the ground floor of Facebook because the two had gotten into some hot water with Harvard with a previous project and the school had threatened him with expulsion.

“We’d gotten into a little bit trouble with the previous project … and my father, who’s a professor, was not too happy with the prospect of me getting kicked out of school,” Green told ABC News. “Zuckerberg likes to make fun of my dad for this, but we’re still very close.”

Rather than joining Zuckerberg and heading to Silicon Valley to develop Facebook, he followed his passion for politics and worked for John Kerry’s failed 2004 presidential campaign.

Now you could say he’s sort of back in the Facebook family. He runs a for-profit business called Causes, a Facebook application and website that lets friends suggest to friends a charity, social cause or even a political candidate. The stated goal of Causes is “to empower anyone with a good idea or passion for change to impact the world.”

Green says Causes Facebook page has 6.5 million active monthly users and his company has helped raise $50 million for 50,000 charities.

The New York Times has reported that Causes received $9 million in venture capital financing, bringing its total financing to $16 million. So, he’s not doing too bad for himself… but just imagine if he’d said YES to Zuckerberg.

Green says he has no regrets. Luckily he does have plenty of Facebook stock.

White wrote, “I’ve put off making records under my own name for a long time but these songs feel like they could only be presented under my name. These songs were written from scratch, had nothing to do with anyone or anything else but my own expression, my own colors on my own canvas.“

Produced by White and recorded at his own Third Man Studio, the track is available exclusively to Third Man Records’ Vault members. Preview the single below.

The digital single will go on sale tonight at 9 pm PST/12 am EST. Third Man will release the 7″ of the single featuring non-LP B-side Machine Gun Silhouette on February 7 but it’s available to pre-order now.

I-75 Pileup Near Gainesville Kills 10

Authorities are trying to determine the cause of a horrific pileup on I-75 south of Gainesville early Sunday where 10 people were killed and 18 hospitalized.

“You could hear cars hitting each other. People were crying. People were screaming. It was crazy,” said Gainesville resident Steven R. Camps hours later. “If I could give you an idea of what it looked like, I would say it looked like the end of the world.”

The interstate was closed for a time before the accidents because of a mixture of fog and heavy smoke from a brush fire that may have been intentionally set. Investigators hope to determine how the fire may have started as well as examine the decision to reopen the highway early Sunday.

At least a dozen cars and six tractor-trailers were involved in the crash, some burst into flames.

This tragedy recalls a series of similar crashes in January 2008 between Orlando and Tampa where four people were killed and 38 injured. More than 70 vehicles were involved in those crashed, including one massive pileup that involved 40 vehicles.

Pat Sajak and Vanna White Used To Get Smashed on “Wheel of Fortune”

In a recent interview, Pat Sajak admits to being drunk on the set of Wheel of Fortune in the early days. He and Vanna White favored a particular Mexican restaurant near the studios in Burbank and would drop in during their 2 and 1/2 hour taping breaks and knock back quite a few margaritas, to the point they wouldn’t recognize the alphabet! Sajak, now 65 years-old, has been hosting the show since 1981 and made the revelation in an interview with ESPN‘s Dan Le Batard.
